Welcome to HF ENG 114 - British and American civilisation

This website is intended as a freestanding supplement to the taught civilization course (HF ENG 114). It is a place where you can come to find out more about British and American civilization and find alternative sources for information. Civilization is not a fixed set of facts, but the sum of the different possible interpretations of these facts. These pages contain some fundamentals which you should make sure that you learn, as well as some more trivial truths which you may find amusing or otherwise interesting.

The relative independence vis-á-vis the taught course means, of course, that these pages might be just as useful to mellom- or hovedfag students, or to people with a general interest in 'boosting' their knowledge about British and American society. No matter who you are we hope you will find these pages fun, stimulating and helpful; feel free to drop us a line and give us your thoughts on how we may improve the site.

A few words on navigation. Use the menu on the top of the page to navigate through the site. When you move the mouse cursor over the menu headers, a menu should fall down. If it doesn't, your browser either doesn't support JavaScript, or this support is turned off. In that case, you must update your browser, turn on the JavaScriåpt support or, alternatively, click the menu header itself. That will take you to a non-JavaScript dependent menu page (which you of course can also use if you find it more practical than the menus.
Under the 'General' tab you will find general course information like pensum, timetable, help/frequently asked questions and so on. The 'Summaries' tab contains summaries of the central topics. 'Lecture notes' will contain just that - lecture notes on central topics. These will be posted throughout the course. If you go to 'Exercises' you'll find various tests, quizzes and so on organized by topic. They provide a good opportunity for finding out how much you remember of the pensum. Finally, there is the 'Links' tab, which leads to a collection of links to various external sites with fun and/or interesting civilization content.
