AleksandraWitczak Haugstad

For her candidatus philologiae degree Aleksandra wrote a hovedfag thesis (completed in 1997) on the role of Rockefeller Foundation in Polish academic life between 1918-1950.

She then carried out a PhD project on "Political Power and Social Science Research: Polish Economics, 1945-65" which resulted in a thesis defended in 2008:

Jon Raundalen

Jon wrote his hovedfag thesis and eaerned his candidatus philologiae degree with excellent results at the Department of Film and Media Studies of the NTNU. The thesis discusses DDR Indianerfilm. It won one of the first PEECS Awards for hovedfag theses of outstanding scholarly value, and a revised version of it was published as Indianeren som westernhelt. En studie av den østtyske westernfilmen (The Indian as a Western Hero. A Study of the East German Western-films) as No. 5 in the Trondheim Studies on East European Cuiltures & Societies.

Jon received a PhD scholarship and he worked, within PEECS’ project on “Discourses of Global Ambitions …” with a thesis on "Coping with 'Imperialist Subversion: Popular Genres and Party Politics in GDR Film Industry in the Late 60s and early 70s". The thesis, titled Mellom Ersatzprodukt og Massenwirksamkeit -- Genrefilmen som kulturelt felt i DDR 1966-1976, was delivered in the Autumn of 2008 and was successfully defended in April 2009.

Hans Strøm

Hans got his candidatus philologiae degree by a thesis on "Storbritannia og utvisningen av den sudettyske befolkningen" (GreatBritain and the expulsion of the Sudeten German population from Czechoslovakia) He took his final exams in the Spring of 1999.

Erik Ingebrigtsen

Erik wrote an excellent hovedfag thesis on "Ungarsk nasjonalisme og amerikansk filantropi: Rockefeller Foundations støtte til modernisering av ungarsk vitenskap og helsevesen 1920-1941" (Hungarian nationalism and American philanthropy: The Rockefeller Foundation and the modernization of science and public health care in Hungary), completed in the Spring of 2000 with the degree of candidatus philologiae. Between August 2003 and November 2006, Erik worked as a PhD student, writing a thesis on the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Health Systems in Hungary, 1920-1941. Erik’s thesis work too was part of our project on transnational tendencies in Eastern Europe. He successfully defended his thesis (Revisjonismens fortsettelse med andre midler. Rockefeller Foundation og folkehelsen i Ungarn, 1920-1941) in March 2007. Between April 2007 and July 2009, Erik works as a post-doctoral scholar on PEECS's project, "Imagining the West". Since July 2009, he has been Advisor/Coordinator of the Norwegian Research School in Medical Imaging.

Robert wrote his his particularly demanding and successful hovedfag thesis for the degree of candidatus philologiae on Marxist-Leninist political economy of socialism in Hungary.

Ingeborg Stensrud

Even Ingeborg's candidatus philologiae has been the result of a thesis on historiography, discussing "R. W. Seton-Watson and the Ethnopolitics of Interwar Eastern Europe".

Ingeborg joined our work on the project "Imagining the West" as an assistant to György Péteri in January 2006. Since 1 March 2006 she has worked with her own PhD-project on "The Presentation of East European Selves. A Study of East European Rockefeller and Ford Fellows in the Interwar and Post-1945 Eras".

Lars Peder Haga

Lars' thesis earning him a candidatus philologiae degree has been written as a contribution to PEECS’ project on “Discourses of Global Ambitions …” and it analyzes Soviet discourses of cultural relations between East Central Europe and the Soviet Union during the 1940s and 1950s.

Lars has received funding from the Globalization Programme of the NTNU to pursue his PhD-project entitled "New Democracies, Friends, and Junior Brothers. Soviet Mental Mapping Over Czechoslovakia and Hungary, 1945-1960".

Jarle Rotås

Jarle’s candidatus philologiae thesis, completed in the Spring of 2003, was concerned with DDR youth policies.

Håvard Faanes

Håvard studied the Polish language in Kraków, Poland, and he wrote his candidatus philologiae thesis on the relationship between Polish communist rule and the Catholic Church:

Mikaela wrote and successfully defended in June 2006 her Master's thesis on "The 'Finlandization' of Finland" analyzing early post-war discourses of "mental mapping" in Finland.

Rolv Kristian Bosness Winther

On the basis of Norwegian Foreign Office documents, Rolv Kristian's MA thesis discusses the Norwegian reception of the Prague Spring and the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968: Et norsk speilbilde av Prahavåren. Ingvild Espelid Thorvaldsen

Ingvild studied the Hungarian language at a year-long intensive course at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. Upon her return to Trondheim, she commenced her MA studies in history and she got her degree with an excellent thesis discussing "Images of the West" in the prominent Hungarian literary periodical "Nyugat" (1908-1941):

Ingvild Staven

has also studied Hungarian language at the Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. She completed in 2010 her MA thesis in History on Hungarian advisory literature directed towards girls and young women in the 1960s.

Tor André Bergli

after the successful conclusion of his academic year spent with language study in Budapest, Tord André worked with an MA thesis in History, on critical social thought in Hungary during the 1960s. The thesis was completed and defended with excellent result in th Spring semester of 2010.

Camilla Nereid

Camilla sucessfully took her MA in history in Bergen with a thesis that was included in the series "Bergen Studies on the Middle East and Africa", No. 4.

She started her PhD thesis work within the frameworks of PEECS's project, "Imagining the West", in May 2006. Camilla successfully defended her thesis, "The Identity Politics of Modernization: Nationalism, Islam, and the West in Kemal Atatürk's Turkey", on 27 January 2012.

Sigurd Sverre Stangeland

Sigurd Sverre took his candidatus philologiae degree at the Department of History and Classics, NTNU, with Professor Anders Kirkhusmo as his adviser and with an excellent thesis on German attitudes and the genocide perpetrated against the Serbian population in the independent Croatian state (Nezavisna Država Hrvatska), 1941-1945:
