Research Seminar

Phenomenological Method in the Study of Human Communication

Focusing on the Contributions by Alfred Schutz

Trondheim – NTNU - Dragvoll

August 9-10, 2004

Professor Thomas Luckmann is respondent to actual research projects

The seminar aims at doctoral students, master students and established researchers with ongoing projects using in one way or another the approach entailing from the research program for studying human communication established in the Schutz tradition. Professor Thomas Luckmann, one of the main representatives of this approach in the world today, will be the main respondent to the projects presented.

The papers presented may refer to projects focused on theoretical (Schutz), methodological (phenomenology) or empirical (human communication) themes, using any kind of material, verbal or visual, as written texts, recorded and transcribed dialogues, video recordings, etc.

Although being an autonomous seminar, it will as well serve as the more systematic theoretical complement to a following, independent empirical research seminar at HiST, Trondheim, on "Meaning Construction and Tactile Sign Language", August 11-12, 2004, at Rotvoll, Trondheim, part of a study program at The Teacher Training College, Department for Sign Language. In this seminar at Rotvoll, video material of communication with deafblind persons will be shown and analysed by the participants under the guidance of professor Luckmann. The study program is a Nordic venture, in cooperation with the Nordic Staff Training Centre for Deafblind Services.

Our seminar on Schutz at Dragvoll will start with one or two session after lunch on Monday, August 9, and continue with two sessions on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. The details of the program will be announced for the participants when the number of contributions is settled.

Travel costs and the stay in Trondheim must be covered by the participants themselves, but as the Schutz seminar gets financial support from the Faculty of Arts, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, there are no registration fees.

Deadline for registration will be June 25, 2004.

For those planning a presentation, a title and an outline is expected within the same date.
